Media
Europe’s biggest publishing group is the Bauer Media Group,
based in Germany, with Bauer Media in the UK being part of the group. Bauer
Media became part of the Bauer Media Group when they bought EMAP. As well as
being a publishing house, Bauer also own TV channels and Radio Stations, which
often accompany a magazine. For instance, Kerrang!
Magazine also has a spin-off radio station, Kerrang! radio. They make over 300 different magazines around the
world.
Bauer Media launched their first magazine Angling Times in 1953. In 1994, they bought For Him and re-launched it has FHM.
Bauer launched Closer in 2002 and
Grazia in 2005.
Bauer Media reach over 19 million adults with their various brands. They want to sell the magazine to customers and the customers to the advertisers. On Bauer’s Advertising Website there is an audience finder tool (pictured on the right). On the audience finder, advertisers narrow down their target audience to find which of Bauer’s magazines (or ‘brands’ as they call them) are most suitable for them to advertise in to reach their target audience. They can choose age range, gender and class (ABC1 etc.).
IPC Media
IPC Media,
founded in 1963, is owned by Time Inc. IPC produces 60 magazines. They reach 26
million adults in the UK and sell over 350 million copies of their magazines
each year. IPC divides the market into four groups. They are Mass Market Women,
Upmarket Men, Upmarket Women and Young Men. Here is how they are described and
which magazines is part of each portfolio:
- Mass Market Women – Includes magazines like TV Times and goodtoknow Recipies. IPC Media describes Mass Market Women as being busy, probably have a family and are interested in celebrities and advice.
- Upmarket Men – Includes magazines such as Amateur Gardening and Amateur Photographer. IPC media describes upmarket men as adventurous and have lots of interests. IPC Media’s magazines aimed at Upmarket Men are mainly for a specific interest
- Upmarket Women – Includes magazines like Wallpaper and Country Homes & Interiors. IPC Media produces magazines for Upmarket Women that are about design, environment and advice. They are described as affluent and aspirational.
- Young Men – Includes NME and Nuts. IPC describes Young Men as being aged 18 – 34 and they produce Lad’s Mags and music magazines to target this audience
