Preliminary Task Analysis

My front cover for my preliminary task appeals to students because it gives them a chance to enter a competition to win a stationary set which is useful for students! The image on the front cover appeals to students because it is someone studying and is therefore relevant to them. It could be improved by making better use of colors. The background behind the masthead is Grey and this does not catch people’s eye very well. However, I like the way I have used red and yellow on the text (‘The College Mag’) in the masthead. Another thing that helps the magazine front cover to appeal to students is the fact that it is a free magazine. Another criticism I have of my front cover is that it could feature more of the articles that are inside the magazine to help it appeal more to readers.

My contents page for my preliminary task shows that the magazine contains articles that are aimed at students. Two good examples of this are ‘Party Tricks’ and ‘Student Holidays’. My contents page could be improved by adding a lot more colour; at the moment it is very plain and boring with the only three colours, being black for the text, red for the title and Grey for the page numbers. There is also a lot of blank space on my contents page, which could be filled with more articles and lots more photos. For my main task, I will include more photos. I also feel that the contents page is not consistent with my front cover in terms of design because the masthead is different, although it is based on the masthead on the front cover.
