The future of the magazine industry

I felt that my evaluation was incomplete without evaluating the future of the magazine industry a bit so I have decided to post a few thoughts on it.

It is widely recognized that the magazine and newspaper industries are under threat from the Internet, iPads and other technologies that give people free content which is content that the reader has chosen to view themselves rather than content given to them by an editor.

To survive, magazines and newspapers will have to adapt to this new technology and some have. For example, the NME makes great use of technology like mobile applications. Although, one of the biggest problems with magazines making greater use of technology is that it is harder - but not impossible - for them to make a profit by charging a subscription for content. People, as a rule, prefer paying for something physical like a magazine rather than something digital.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the magazine industry.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing your product?

How did you attract/address your audience?

To answer this question, I have annotated my magazine on Flickr. Use each link below and then roll over the image to see the annotations.

Who would be the audience for your media product and why?

What type of media product might distribute your media product and why?

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
